The GKS, or Graphics Kernel System, is a long time ANSI/ISO standard for 2 dimensional computer graphics.  The focus of the GKS is to provide the applications programmer a computer graphics system which is independent of Operating System and hardware platform.  The GKS provides a rich set of graphics primitives, various user input models and a segment model used to group graphics primitives into a single manageable entity.  There are API bindings to several programming languages such as C, Fortran, Pascal and ADA.  Implementations of the GKS are available for DOS/Windows environments, Linux/Unix environments, and a variety of input and output devices including a CGI device.
