The CGI, or Computer Graphics Interface, is a long time ANSI/ISO standard for 2 dimensional computer graphics as well.  It is implemented in a client/server paradigm much like (and preceding) the X Windows environment.  There are client side API bindings to several programming languages such as C, Fortran, Pascal and ADA.  On the server side the CGI Interpreter can be optimized with respect to size and performance characteristics for your specific display hardware.  The CGI also provides non-occluded (non-overlapping) window support and is an ideal solution for embedded systems where performance and footprint are important factors.
